Synonym nuances Famed is an appropriate word to use when suggesting a specific cause of someone's or something's renown: a city famed for its hospitality . This idea continues with acclaimed , which carries the further notion of enthusiastic approval: the acclaimed production of Madam Butterfly . Popular also implies being much liked, if more unofficially: the most popular singer of his day . Eminent is a more formal, restrained term to use: eminent scientists of the day . Honoured is suggestive of something that has attracted plaudits, while venerable emphasizes that something is worthy of reverence. Glorious , although it again implies distinction, is more emotive and highly marked with approval: the country's glorious history . Both notorious and infamous , however, carry a disapproving tone, and suggest being widely known for your misdeeds rather than good works. The terms legendary and legend could be used of someone or something long-established, and have connotations of an exaggerated fame: the legendary blues singer . Remarkable has more to do with being singular in one's achievements and is fairly approbatory in tone: a remarkable phase in the nation's history . Signal is not particularly marked in tone, and returns to the idea of being singularly conspicuous and significant: his expulsion from All Souls was the signal point of his academic career . |
