a a long narrow piece of leather or cloth worn around the waist to keep clothing in place, or for decoration, etc;
b in certain sports, eg boxing and judo: a band worn around the waist signifying that the wearer has achieved a specific standard (eg black belt).
2 a seat belt. See also lap belt.
3 an area or zone, usually a relatively long and narrow one a belt of rain .
4 (often in compounds ) a band of rubber, etc moving the wheels, or round the wheels, of a machine fan belt conveyor belt .
5 slang a hard blow.

1 to put a belt around someone or something.
2 to beat someone or something with a belt.
3 tr & intr colloq to hit someone repeatedly.
4 intr (esp belt along) colloq to move very fast, especially in a specified direction belting along on his bike belted back home .
5 (also belt something on) to fasten it with, or on with, a belt.

1 to stop talking; to be quiet.
2 to fasten one's seat-belt.
