singular noun a team game with 18 players on each side, that combines features of both association football (see under football) and rugby and which is played on an oval pitch with a large rugby-like ball which may be carried, kicked or punched, the object being to score by kicking the ball between either of two pairs of goalposts which have no crossbars.
