neither ,
adjective , pronoun not the one nor the other (thing or person) Neither proposal is acceptable Neither of the proposals is acceptable .
conjunction (used to introduce the first of two or more alternatives; usually paired with nor) not I neither know nor care .
adverb nor; also not If you won't, neither will I .
[Anglo-Saxon nawther or nahwæther ]
neither here nor there irrelevant; unimportant.

neither Neither is followed by a singular or plural verb, although a singular verb is usually regarded as more correct: ? Neither of us likes the idea very much. ? Neither of the old women in the house was in bed. ? Neither of them were drunk. It is sometimes impossible to tell whether the verb is singular or plural because there is no difference in form: ? Neither of us spoke for a few minutes. This increases the uncertainty. Recommendation: use a singular verb for preference. Note that neither should be paired with nor, not with or: ? He possessed neither arms nor armour.
