1 a network of evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines that can be superimposed on a map, chart, etc, especially in order to locate specific points.
2 such a network used for constructing a chart.
3 a network of power transmission lines, consisting of overhead wires and underground cables, by means of which electricity is distributed from power stations across a region or country. See also national grid.
4 a network of underground pipes by which gas, water, etc is distributed across a region or country.
5 a framework of metal bars, especially one covering the opening to a drain. See also grating1.
6 an arrangement of lines marking the starting-points on a motor-racing track.
7 electronics an electrode, usually consisting of a perforated wire screen or a spiral of wire, that controls the flow of electrons from the cathode to the anode of a thermionic valve or vacuum tube.
