latter || In sense 2, latter strictly refers to the second of two choices (and former refers to the first): Do I have to choose between goat's cheese and chocolate cake? Sometimes I prefer the latter, sometimes the former. He and Mr Doran ? the latter complaining mightily about his lumbago ? pushed the cakes to the back of the table. || More loosely, especially in speech, it refers to the last of several choices: The story is reported in the Express, Guardian and Telegraph. The latter also has extensive photo coverage. || In sense 1, it does not contrast with former, and it means more or less the same as later, to which it is related in origin: An upturn in profits was recorded in the latter part of the decade. It will not be long before her name appears in the latter stages of the world's leading tournaments.
