sentence A sentence is sometimes defined as a grammatical structure that contains at least one clause with an expressed subject and a finite verb, as in I'm going home or It'll be cooler outside or If you were as fit as that , would you waste your time doing press-ups? However, in many sentences, sometimes known as sentence fragments, the subject and/or the verb may be implied rather than expressed: -Where are you going?- -To have a bath.- (= -I'm going to have a bath-) -What's he doing now?- -Thinking.- (= -He's thinking-) The same is true for exclamations, such as How awful! and What a pity!
