partly, partially || These words are often used indiscriminately to mean -in part?: A blow on the head left him partially deaf for the rest of his life. About half the population is wholly or partially dependent on food aid. Redpath was a good policeman partly because he was also a sensitive and humane man. || Both words are found in conjunction with words like -because, due to, explains, filled, obscured, open, responsible, successful, true?. || Partly is used more often when it is paired, either with itself or with and also or but also : Poor productivity is to be blamed partly on bad management of the workforce and partly on lack of investment. It is partly a personal and partly a property tax. The film was a big success, partly because of its openness about sex, but also because of the leading actors. || Partly is also used more often when followed by an adjective or participle that is itself further qualified: The house is partly built of stone. (which refers to a completed house) The house is partly/partially built. (which refers to an uncompleted house). Recommendation: generally prefer partly; use partially when there is a special sense of incompleteness. |
