majority Strictly, in sense 1 majority should only be used with reference to several things that could be numbered or counted: ? The majority of our customers leave a generous gratuity. ? The majority of perennials flower during this period. It should not be used when referring to things that are not countable, such as substances and concepts: ? He spent the majority of his working life as a schoolteacher. Although it is a singular noun, majority usually takes a plural verb in this sense, as in the examples given above.
